Great Chieftain O' The Pudding Race!
Jan. 26th, 2006 06:56 pmSimon and I had a Burns Supper last night. What a great evening! We had meat and vegetarian haggis, mashed potatoes and, because turnip/swede was not to be had in N1 yesterday for love nor money, mashed parsnips and mashed sweet potato. The sweet potato actually went remarkably well with haggis. We had clootie dumpling for pudding, home made to my mother's recipe. The recipe, for those who requested it, is here.
Afterwards we had whisky and recitals of Burns poems from Hester (I'm O'er Young to Marry Yet, in a fabulous RP version), Alasdair (A Parcel of Rogues in a Nation) and James (To A Mouse). I did John Barleycorn and Simon did the Address to the Haggis (which we hadn't wanted to do before dinner as the meat one had split and was in danger of getting cold), in the most wonderful mix of Scots, Middle English, Yorkshire and RP accents. It was Burns, not as we know it, but wonderfully expressive and entertaining nonetheless. Liz, Peta and Will gracefully declined to recite anything, but perhaps we'll get them next time.
Thanks to all for whisky, extra crockery and cutlery, pots, recitations and great company. Hopefully next year we'll have a bigger flat/kitchen and be able to invite more people.
