I finished the Guardian crossword on Monday. However I couldn't finish it on Thursday. Does anyone have Friday's paper who could tell me the answers to 4 across and down please?

If anyone wants to do it the hard way, the clues are:

4 across: Tipple offered as Batman finally snared by the Riddler? (7)

4 down: In Bayeux, where threading hole is weaving (7)

The letters I've got so far are:

4 across: --I-T-R
4 down: --N-O-S

I'm about as sure as I can be that those letters are correct.

Last Friday was Good Friday - was there a paper published?

No help with the clues I'm afraid.

I think the Guardian only isn't published on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

4a Snifter?

4d.........

Nevermind, I'll look it up when I get to work tomorrow. We have three month's worth of Grauniads.

Yeah, I can sort of see that, seems tenuous but I felt like that about other one that was definitely right. sifter = riddler, plus the final n from "Batman".

I'd appreciate it that if you wouldn't mind! It would be good to know for sure! Thanks!

4 down; 'weaving' = 'sinuous'? Can't work out how it works with everything else though.

That sounds right and if Twiglet is right it would fit. I can't work out where Bayeux comes in though, although I assume the hole is the "o".

well the bayeux tapestry is very long...

Hmm... "In bayeux, where" could be ou, threading a hole "sinus" -- which is pretty weak.

Apparently in anatomy "sinus" means any cavity in the body (which I didn't know).

Ah, cheers, that makes sense now. I don't like that clue either.

I love clues where when I'm told the answer I go "aha... that's clearly why" or where I can build up the clue from parts even if the answer is a word I don't know. I really don't like clues where I get the answer because it fits the grid and struggle to work backwards -- that's what I had to do with those two.

ah the joys of working in a media monitoring company - having consulted our copy, i can confirm that 4a is indeed "snifter", and 4d is indeed sinuous...!

Wouldn't have got either of those myself. Riddler == sifter is pretty weak I think.
