I haven't heard enough of the Stooges to be able to judge how good they are musically, and I'm not sure I musically understand The Doors. (Does anyone?) So I wouldn't know.
The Doors that I've heard tends towards having instrumental sections that really make me sit up and take notice. I regret to say I can't say the same for anything Mr Pop has been involved in, uh, ever. Except 'Gimme Danger', but we've been through that. :)
By that logic the Ozric Tentacles are better than both of them (to be fair, I do like them better than both of them, mind...) - longest song that's not long because of a hidden track in my iTunes clocks in at 19:03. But then Simon likes them too, doesn't he?
And then after that it's Dead Can Dance. I'm noting a pattern here.
It's Sunday, I'm not being serious :) Although I could probably write a comparison of the Doors and the Ozrics if I were at school and had to. But then I once planned and drafted an essay about similarities between the New Romantics and the Romantics (as in the poets, not the New Wave band of mild renown) so I can crowbar most things like that really.
Erm, drugs and shagging? Oh, and big white shirts. Although strangely there's something altogether healthier and more wholesome about the New Romantics.

Cuh, what was implicit is that there's far more opportunity in Doors songs to work out musical ideas. Which there is, and which is why they're better. Not that I don't like the Stooges, but the Doors are far more interestingly psych-y. And they're a heroin and dope band, not a speed band. And that's just better. ;-p

2) The charisma and excitement provided by said band and singer. Iggy wins. (And he actually DOES get his nob out on stage, unlike Jim, the little tease).
3) Level of pretentious bollocks. Iggy wins.
4) Ghastliness of fans. Iggy wins.
5) Musical acomplishment. The Doors win, although there are some tracks that really get on my tits. Iggy/Stooges did some good stuff, but frankly it's a trfle too raw for regular listening, I have to be in a specific mood for a lot of it.

Sure there are probably more ghastly Doors fans than Stooges fans in absolute numbers, but the proportions are probably just the same. Think of all those skanky old punks loitering on Camden High St. 5) They both have their moments. I really like some Stooges stuff, especially Search and Destroy. But the Doors have it for me on balance.
There's also far more opportunity for them to get boring and to disappear up their own arses though; Iggy gets in there, does the business, and gets out while you still want more.
Precisely. I grew up with both playing in the house, and while I do like The Doors style, there is more than enough of it in an average Doors song. In fact, most Doors tracks would be infinitely improved by being reduced to about 66% of their length.
It didn't help that there was a guy in my circle of friends at uni who would always put "Riders on the Storm" on the jukebox every time we went out, because it was the longest song listed and thus 'value for money'.
Well, I picked The Doors, cause I think most of the time I'd prefer to listen to them. But if the question was something like 'Which band would you eliminate from music history?', I'd want to keep The Stooges, rather than get rid of the horde of bands they spawned. That just wouldn't do. ;-)
For me, the answer with questions like these (Beatles vs stones, Oasis vs Blur) has always been 'yes' or 'no' rather than one or other of the bands. I am tiresome snowflake boy in that regard. The reason I mentioned those two LPs is because I care for both, for instance.
The answer to a different question would be 'I'd rather be in a Stooges cover band.'

I would be interested in hearing the whole discussion regarding the different types of people. I do agree that this is an interesting personality divison, but I wonder if it's for the same reasons.
It wasn't so much personalities as "my lot" vs "his lot", the sort of musicians who were influenced by one or other. (He was surprised when I told him Siouxsie and the Banshees cite "Moonlight Drive" as an influence.) It was an argument that drifted all over the place and was really very silly. e.g. I said I'd rather shag Iggy and he said, well yes, Jim Morrison's been dead for 35 years...
I'm really not familiar with Iggy's work on the whole, couldn't tell you the name of a song though i'm sure i've heard a bit over the years. Jim's lyrics are a bit too heady for me sometimes but overall i do like them. I particularly like Roadhouse Blues, straightforward, bluesy rock, mindless lyrics. :)
I'm probably the only one on here who has seen both bands live (not any recent incarnations) and pick The Doors since they put on a cracking live show and have written some of my all time favourite songs (especially Moonlight Drive.
I do love the Igster's rawness live and have seen him about 5 times over a few decades and have to admit it was a close choice of which to pick.
I made my choice based on which band I would generally prefer to listen to*. Nothing to do with musical influence, which cover band it would be more fun to be in, or which lead singer really got his dick out. I can never be accused of over-thinking the question...

ha! i evened it up without even knowing it. stogges win. hands down, every time. doors are alright, but if you want to bounce around and have fun it HAS to be the stooges, plus iggy oozes sex appeal and jim morrison...well imo he was past it before he died!
The Doors are creatures of their time, and haven't really dated well. It was all a bit sprawling and self-indulgent. They were very influential, and not least on Iggy - The Passenger was based on one of Morrison's poems - but I don't think their recordings are as good, and they were even more flatulent in the live footage I've seen.
If you come across a copy of Please Kill Me, do pick it up - the late-sixties part of the interviews has people lining up to say what a little shit Morrison was. It's funny, in a train-wreck sort of way.
